We came in after hearing it was the place to go up this direction. I read about how it was deemed the most iconic restaurant in Iowa and at the end of the day, we were glad we stopped in, but not blown away. To start, this place is small! Definitely an old house and room for maybe 25 total. Creates a nice atmosphere. We had late reservations so we expected to wait. The hangout area is upstairs and pretty dimly lit. Plenty of tables and booths, though the booths don't have lights and ours was pretty dark. The waitress was friendly and got us drinks fairly quickly and we snacked on check mix. Not a real extensive wine and beer list, but enough for most folks. After about 45 minutes we grew a little weary of the wait and were seated about 10 minutes later. Once downstairs our waitress came over quickly and discussed the menu. She did a good job of going over things and gave good recommendations. The bread up front of things was good and they didn't skimp, a nice change. There are no appetizers or desserts, which I found a little odd, but it worked. The steaks are all aged nicely and there are plenty of cuts, though nothing I haven't had before. I ended up ordering the filet and my better half had the ribeye. The cuts were good, we just weren't huge fans of the way they're prepared. The Greek style of effectively broiling them in olive oil and butter definitely lead to a tender steak, but we're more meat and fire folks. These were very much prepared in an oven and it just wasn't our dig. That said, the Greek spaghetti as a side was excellent! Reminded us of brown butter and mizithra spaghetti at ye old spaghetti factory! I would bathe in that action if it didn't violate a "social norm". All in all, this was a worthwhile and pleasant evening. The wait was long, but not unexpected. The sides were excellent and the steak was unique. While I'm glad we tried a Greek style steak, we won't be oiling our steaks in the near future. You'll drop $80 pretty easily, but it's worth it to say you've been here. End of the day, you may declare it the best ever or may not agree it's iconic Iowa, but regardless this place is worth checking out at least once.

The steak did live up to the hype and lore. The steaks are quality and served in a large amount of butter sauce, from my understanding there are a few famous places that do similar. I would get a little less butter if I was there again. The steak was delicious and worth the value overall. The sides including salad could use some work, they aren't anything special and the reason for the four rating. The steak is a 5 and sides are a 2. If your driving by or staying in town this is a great choice for dinner.

I live in Los Angeles but come to Iowa often to visit family. I cannot leave town without hitting the Northwest Steakhouse. Corn fed beef, fantastic Greek family cooking and an old school setting that you simply don't see these days. If you're in Iowa, come to the Northwest. You won't be disappointed.

Be sure to call ahead. I loved the steak and noodles for the side. It's probably a weekly dose of butter, but it's worth it. Can't wait to come back again.

This place was fantastic. The beer was cold and the filet was tender. The spaghetti was crazy good. No frills, just good food.

How you react to the steaks at the Northwestern Steakhouse will depend entirely upon how you like your steak to be cooked. As some previous reviews have noted, the NW doesn't flame grill their steaks. Instead they cook them in a seasoned butter/olive oil mix that, while extremely delicious, definitely differs from most steakhouses. The meat is incredibly tender but mostly as a result of the butter/oil mix and not some careful combo of searing and grilling as it would be at many flame-based steak places. In fact, much of what you will order at the NW involves generous portions of butter which isn't a bad thing necessarily but also can be overwhelming if you aren't prepared. The two times I've visited the steakhouse have been enjoyable experiences - my steak was cooked to order (medium) both times, my sides were tasty (tried the potato most recently and the pasta on my first trip) and the drinks were good. That said, the atmosphere in the NW is incredible, like something out of Twin Peaks, and really makes the visit worthwhile. The waitstaff knows their stuff and is readily available. Both times I've been to the NW I had reservations and from what I've read the experience is different for walk-ins. I would definitely suggest making a reservation to anyone thinking about going and trying to go for a later meal (anytime after 7:45 pm) because it seems like things settle down about then. I would NOT say the Northwestern Steakhouse has the best steak in Iowa. In my experience 801 Grand in Des Moines has that distinction. That said, if you don't mind a little butter and enjoy a tender steak in a great atmosphere, the Northwestern won't disappoint.

My friends and I are visiting and asked where we could get a good steak. This restaurant was highly recommended to us and it was given rave reviews. We didn't have reservations so we had to wait for about 30 minutes which was completely understandable. When our name was called we walked inside and noticed that it was extremely warm inside, almost uncomfortable. The ribeye steak was recommended to me so I thought that I would give it a try. When the meal came out and I tried it I was not impressed, it was mediocre at best. The staff was very nice and the place was clean which is why I gave it three stars instead of just two. If you're looking for a good grilled steak I would not recommend this establishment because you will probably be disappointed.

One of the best filet steaks I have had. The steak comes with melted butter, which really makes it delicious. The Greek salad is also one of my favorites. I also love they serve spaghetti noodles with browned butter and parmesan cheese which goes great with the steaks. To set your expectations, this is not a NYC or Chicago steakhouse. This is a very unique Midwestern steakhouse who serves their steaks a little differently. Which is not a bad thing. Actually, it is really damn good.

Yummy, yummy, yum! The steaks are delicious and cooked to perfection. The sides, including the Greek salad and huge baked potato, are icing on the proverbial cake! Add a glass of wine, it's a meal to wait for! Which you probably will need to do, but it's absolutely worth it!

I have no idea what everyone is this area is raving about this place for!? Im starting to believe the locals have never been to a real steakhouse before. The Ribeye wasn't that good and was placed in butter and then people keep recommending I get pasta as a side with the steak. Its freaking noodles with cheese on them, really?? I felt like I was back in college again forced to eat Ramen noodles! They basically had no wine list, cheap wine that was on there and cheap wine glasses too. It was not romantic whatsoever either for my date. I cant complain about the service it was ok. And whats up with almost every steak restaurant in town being Greek! Northwestern, Prime & Wine, and The Chop are all the same basically. If I was forced to choose I would go with the Prime & Wine though, better wine list at least somewhat.

"The best steak I have ever eaten." That's a quote from my husband, king of the carnivores, and it's pretty close to accurate. I have been coming to the Northwestern (or, as we call it, "Pete's") for more than 35 years. I don't live in Iowa, but my family does, and every time I've come up for a visit for as long as I remember, we've gone to Pete's for a steak. The food here has always been great -- even back in my teens when I was a "vegetarian," I loved their jumbo shrimp. And now that I'm a happy meat lover, I'm glad that their steaks live up to the hype. These steaks are cooked in olive oil and butter, so they're not the healthiest meals in town. But, man, are they good. Get a Greek salad and a side of spaghetti (or rice). Any cut of steak will do, although the fillet (yes, they spell it with two "Ls") is the standout. My husband gets the ribeye, but I like the lady fillet. The sides are awesome, as is the crunchy Italian-style bread. The decor is decidedly old school, and there's always a wait to get in, but that's part of the allure. The steaks might be pricey compared to chain restaurants, but the wine is relatively cheap, and as I said before, these are some of the best steaks you'll ever have. There may be other steakhouses in Mason City, but for my money (or my Dad's!), this is the best in town. And while I've been to plenty of five-star restaurants in Vegas and elsewhere, I'd put the steaks here up against the best of them. See you next time, Pete's! And thanks for dinner, Dad!

Steaks are delicious! I've been here twice and it's been good both times. Prices are reasonable for a steakhouse too. It's kind of a hole in the wall, but I like it. Had to wait until 8pm on a Tuesday to get a seat. Pretty popular place. Make sure to get the spaghetti with your steak too!

This is your chance to have dinner in a time warp! Your baked potato will arrive wrapped in foil. The bread will be like the kind from a grocery store, not a bakery. The butter pats will be the kind you remembered from way back when- might even be margarine. The food is all covered in oil. In short, you'll be looking for your TV tray! Especially so because it is exhausting to get a table here. It's a fun, authentic Mason City experience to eat here. It's not gourmet but it is very good in a guilty pleasure kind of way. The wine list is...interesting. If you like a good red wine with your steak, have some before you go and then think about it while you are eating. On the bright side, you can have a bottle here for something like $20. It has a nice vibe because everyone there knows how lucky they are to have a table. Meat! Potatoes! Excitement in the air! Hooray!

So incredibly good! Not much in terms of atmosphere, but it has the most delicious steak! Brought four friends from NY to try it & they all loved it! Everything on the menu is delicious & the steak is so tender, it's incredible!
I feel bad, I really do. I had such high hopes and I guess I expected something else and I really shouldn't ding it for what the food is...but I just don't get it. The place is quaint, very nostalgic, has a cool history, and i'd have it on my list of repeat visits if it wasn't for the food. My gut tells me the place is more about the style of the way the meat is prepared (to each is own), or it has to be the bang for your buck portions...one of those. For me personally when I walked in, I felt like I was at Arthur's steakhouse in Jersey....my new home away from home...BRING IT ON (I had a smile). I went in with the expectation of having a beast of a steak that was charred and grilled to perfection. What I got was a massive 20 oz porterhouse that was swimming.....swimming....swimming in olive oil, butter, and oregano. Before we move on...I get the Greek seasoning, I've done it as well and do like it and have had it in other places in Mason City. So I get the seasoning thing, but i'll take a step back and say that maybe I didn't have my expectations set correctly. First the smell caught me, then i asked myself "is that....oil, or juice?" I unhappily plowed through this meat until I just couldn't take it. I even poured the mixture oil into my bread bowl to just get rid of it. For the first time my partner in crime in the hunt for food said to me "you're quiet....but I don't know how to take it". The only thing we could describe the meat as....was "Gray". Was it fried? Was it...Steamed? I have no idea....but it was "gray". Folks do sware by it and that's fine. It's probably not my style, but again, I just don't get it. I'm not going to judge the salad or sides cause that is not what this place is about. I just don't get the "line out the door" description. The staff was super nice and friendly and i also felt bad after hearing at least four times "hope to see you soon/again" or "come back soon" and all I could do was nod with a smile (and I felt dumb). The amount of meat I left was sad and even when they asked if I wanted to bring it home for the puppy...i said "no" and I got a weird look. I should have said "I flew in" or something else like "i don't have a dog" or "i'm not from around". I just said "no". I'm sorry guys....but I really did not like this food. I'm taking it up by a star to two, because I do feel bad and it's probably just not my style. I just don't get it......"gray". That's how we describe it to others....and they just...know

If you are a carnivore and love hidden gems, this is a must if you are in the area. This is certainly not a location that you would happen upon and the on-the-hour seating with no reservations turns some away. However, if you are willing to put up with that then you will be rewarded with the best steak of your life. Hyperbole? I live in the Twin Cities, I've done 400,000 miles on Delta and have eaten at top rated restaurants on three different continents and there is no place I would go back to before NW Steakhouse. Pair a filet with the spaghetti and you'll be a happy, and full, camper. Wine selection is limited so don't expect to add a Silver Oak to your meal. Small town pricing and friendly wait staff are big pluses to the great food.

I expected exactly what I got. A big steak, cooked to order, that was on a plate surrounded by melted butter. Yes that's right. A steak on a plate full of melted butter. Why you ask? Because they can, and it's delicious. Now I would not suggest eating here more than once a year, but jeez they make a good steak! My partner and I had essentially the same meal which made it super easy on the waitress (other than my 2 glasses of Malbec). The New York Strip (med. rare), with fries. A normal garden salad with blue cheese dressing/crumbles, and a whole lot of napkins. Holy god it was so unbelievably delicious! I cannot believe that I actually finished it! Love the small town atmosphere, LOVE the food, and the service was also fantastic. It was without a doubt the greatest introduction to Mason City! I'm sure I will be back, but I'm following my once a year rule to prevent dying of a heart attack.

Well, there's something to be said about a place that can't seat any new customers after being open for 30 seconds. That's exactly what happened when we arrived at the Northwestern Steakhouse. I was tipped off on this establishment by a local who raved about it as one of his all-time favorite restaurants. He gave me fair warning to get here early, as did the owner of a local business. We arrived a full half-hour before they opened and there were already minivans full of people waiting to get in. We stood in the rain. By the time we found our seats they were already turning people away. This place is not fancy. It's been in the same place for 50 years, and they have mastered their routine. Simple salads, white bread with seasame seeds and a caraffe of water. I ordered the filet and was tipped off to have the "greek" spaghetti. The filet is one of the best and most memorable I've ever had. Fork tender, seasoned in greek herbs and spices and sitting in a warm pool of clarified butter. It melted in my mouth. A true local pleasure and well worth the hassle.

First let me say that my server Donna was excellent! Would I eat here again? Absolutely. I guess I just had my hopes up for an incredible steak and it just...wasn't. It was good and worth every penny of the price I paid for the Tuesday night special, just don't expect a life changing meal. Middle of the road food, great service and factory beer only (bud, miller, coors, etc). Go in with less than perfect expectations and you'll be fine dining here! Will come again.

If you're looking for the heart healthy diet, this is NOT it. But you will find the BEST steak you'll ever sink your teeth into! My family has enjoyed the Northwestern Steakhouse for three generations and counting.

Reservation is often necessary/recommended. Try your meat order without sauce beforehand, because it is not needed. Their secret seasoning is amazing on their steaks, best steak I've ever had! The Greek Salad and Spaghetti are awesome! Ask what their special is.

The hype is all true - the best steak in the world. Each bite is like ambrosial butter. It's a down-home hole-in-the-wall experience. Yes, the salads are funky. Get there early or you'll be waiting for a while. (full disclosure: my father apparently asked for my mother's hand in marriage, from my grandfather, in the side room, one evening in 1966. So, even apart from the divine steaks, I have a reason to be positively disposed :) )

The steak is very delicious here!!! I had to change my pants when I got back to my room, they were that good! Saw about 40 good reviews online about this place but that wasn't what made me decide to go. It was the word of mouth from the locals, that triumphs all. They don't even need to advertise, they are that good!!! They are only open 5pm-10pm. You have to be there by 440pm to get a seat or you are waiting til 8pm. They have 8 booths and about the same on tables I would say, didn't go in that part to see. They sit you down and you have your nice, crispy water and it isn't tap water. Which was quite refreshing, served in a GLASS with a Glass container for refills. Then after ordering you get your bread/butter along with your salad. Then comes your choice of steak and your side. They do have daily specials so check the website. The daily special was the New York Cut but I heard some wonderful things about the Fillet so I went that route instead. The steak was cooked to perfection!!! Awesome favor to the steak and it was super juicy. I savored that steak the best I could. The side I had was the spaghetti and it is really super tasty. It has the spaghetti noodles topped with some kind of butter/Parmesan cheese mixture. YUMMMMM!!!! When I was eating that steak and spaghetti I never placed my knife/fork down for a drink. I've been out of there for about an hour and still taste that wonderful steak in my mouth. mmmmmmmm

Best steak in the city... And many more cities. I love it because the filet is always cooked how I want it. It swims in butter, and you will crave it from the time you walk out until you die. Get ready for them to ruin your life! ...in a good way

I was expecting more of a Supper Club type experience. The receptionist at the Holiday Inn recomended it so I did. The environment is more of a diner than a steakhouse. It is very bright and there are booths lining both walls. There are napkin dispensers on each table and they serve thier drinks in cans. The greek salad was good, except it had pickles and eggs on it. Strange. The New York strip was very fatty. Don't waste your time.

It's almost a 5 star review. If it had been based on food alone, it would be for sure. But yelp has it as a "2 $'s" and I must disagree and call it 3 $'s. UNLESS, you walk in one night and their fantastic new york strip is on sale from $22.95 to $15.95. Because thats what happened to my party of 6, and we each gleefully ordered that delicious slab of beef and devoured it heartily. We were given 18oz prime rib a few days later, and we lamented at how it wasn't as good as our NY strips. I went with the spaghetti, and now I'm trying to find my own recipe for it. Great decision!

too fun! maybe i just had the great company of some native mason citiers, but this was seriously a good meal. everyone at the table had the ladies fillet and it was cooked perfectly medium rare as ordered. the butter was oozing off the steak and pooling on the plate. so good! i'm not a big steak eater so i can't attest to all the fancy details of the steak. all i know is that i ate it and i was happy. the fries were not the best but there are lots of sides choices. the prices are good, the service friendly, and the ambiance perfect. lots of interesting posters on the wall, lots of locals, and perfectly dive-y.

#1, GET RESERVATIONS! Ok, than it'll be damn good experience. Very friendly folks, except the cook who stared at us in a mean, extremely rude way. It would of been 5 stars....steak was damn good. Salad was ok. Bread was just ok. But steak..yum.

My favoritest restaurant in the whole wide world! Every time I'm in town, I eat here. The filet is the best I've ever had...never an ounce of fat...my mouth is watering just thinking about it:) With the filet (medium rare) order the spaghetti...not what you think. It's not with a tomato sauce, more steak juices and a white dry cheese. I stick with the filet these days because I only visit 1/2 times per year but the walleye and shrimp were always good backups when I ate there weekly.

I would go more often but it's hard to get a table. You can call ahead to put your name on a wait list, but sometimes you still can't get in. Once you're in though - OUTSTANDING steaks. Always perfectly cooked. I can take or leave the side dishes, but the spaghetti with steak seasonings is pretty great. This place is nothing fancy. Come in your jeans. Don't expect dirty martinis and an extensive wine list and you'll be a happy camper.

Great place to eat steak! I love this place! I always order the Ribeye. My husband orders the TBone Steak. Both of them are very good. And YES, Definately order the Spaghetti as your side. It's very good! Soaked in a butter/olive oil type sauce mixed w/some greek seasoning and probably steak juice?? And topped w/a very tasty dry cheese. Very very good. The shrimp is good too as another suggestion. If you want to plan ahead, make reservations early as you will always have a wait on the weekends. But they do have a nice waiting area upstairs where you can sit at tables, visit and order drinks. A little bit spendy for the young kiddo's and not great accommodations for kids, but you can make it work if you want. They do have a high chair or two. The seating is minimal though so if your traveling with a group, it's best to call ahead. This is the best steakhouse around!

I was so excited to go here. I read the 16 reviews here and like everyone else the locals at my hotel said I had to try NorthWestern Steak House. I was really excited and felt I was let down. From the beginning I showed up on a snowy May night. I got right in (I was by myself) and there were several open tables. I guess I lucked out. I was told the must haves on the menu were: 1) Either the Filet or the Rib Eye 2) A small Greek salad 3) the spaghetti side dish with cheese. I was really disappointed. Now like most posters here, I have traveled quite literally all over the world and have been to all the top steak houses. So maybe I was expecting something great? Maybe this place just didn't live up to the hype? Maybe in the middle of Iowa, a 90 year local place is the best they have been to? I'm not sure. I'll list each part: The Greek salad. It was iceberg lettuce, feta, some onions, a Greek vinaigrette and a pickle. It wasn't bad, but it was just a regular Greek salad with a pickle on top??!!? I wasn't impressed. I opted for the Rib Eye: I ordered it rare. It was good, but it was so loaded with butter and very unremarkable. One of the reasons I hate Ruth Chris steak house is your steak comes sizzling and drowned in butter. To me butter isn't very original and after the first few bites, it really wears on you. The rib-eye was a nice cut, but I could have picked out something similar at my local Costco and grilled it myself without the butter, and with one of my great homemade marinades. Again - they don't have a nearby Costco so in lieu of this, this might but a great steak - but butter seems to be their staple flavor. The Spaghetti: it's was Spags with parmesan cheese and some other herb and more of that butter. I have made something similar at home. Boil some Spags, mix in some butter ( I prefer extra virgin olive oil) and some of your favorite herbs and put some Parmesan on top. Again, nothing that wowed me. It was tasty, but still unremarkable. I think I would have been pissed if I waited in line for such a bland, mediocre meal. I still think one of the best steak houses in Capital Grille. I know it's a chain but things like béarnaise, the ass kissing, the lobster mac-n-cheese, the Delmonico and the desserts put some wind in my sail. Also the ambiance is fantastic. Go to the Capital Grille in Las Vegas across from the Wynn for a true treat with some great views. At NorthWestern Steak, I felt like I was eating in a diner - with the same small box napkin holder on the table. All I needed was a radio to drop nickels into and my waitress wearing a poodle skirt. In my opinion Capital Grille blows away a joint like NorthWestern Steakhouse. It is doubtful I would go again, but because of the nostalgia, I would recommend everyone go at least once. I think you will be seriously let down if you truly know good steaks and steak houses. I would also never wait in line for this. NEVER. So go midweek or at an off time if it's possible like I did and I probably wouldn't go with more than 4 people, since you won't get any big table and as most everything is a wooden booth made for 4 people. And equally if you are in Mason City for business or pleasure, you should try THE QUARRY (over near the mall and the Frank Lloyd Wright hotel) or try PRIME AND WINE out on the highway; the food and ambiance in my opinion were much better at both places. I also hear CHOP on Federal near the mall is good, and that's where I will go next time.

(4)Kary M.

(4)Seth L.
Always good food and a great time!! No complaints whatsoever.
(5)CHRIS C.
Excellent steak and the Greek spaghetti is amazing. I miss this place. if you are a health nut, good luck. The steaks are cooked in a butter type sauce. tastes great but I'm sure my heart hates me everytime I eat here.
(4)Jodie B.
